Seminar: Benjamin Moorhouse

Applied linguistics scholars’ disclosure of AI use: Emerging conventions
by Prof. Benjamin Moorhouse

As generative AI (GenAI) tools enter academic research and writing, norms for what to disclose—and where—remain unclear with discipline conventions still emerging. In this talk, I share a study where colleagues and I explored how applied linguistics scholars currently report GenAI use in published research. In the study, we systematically reviewed 3,384 research articles published between September 2024 and August 2025 in 84 SSCI-indexed applied linguistics journals, focusing on formal disclosure locations (acknowledgements, declarations, additional information). We found that only 4.2% of articles included any AI-related disclosure: 2.8% declared use and 1.4% declared non-use. Disclosures were concentrated in a minority of journals, suggesting strong policy-driven effects rather than field-wide convergence. When present, disclosures most often appeared as standalone statements naming specific tools—especially ChatGPT and Grammarly—and describing language-focused purposes (editing, clarity, proofreading). Human accountability clauses were common, asserting author review and responsibility. Non-use statements were typically brief and, in some venues, standardized. Reports of data-related uses (e.g., data translation, instrument design) were rare. I conclude by proposing proportionate, structured disclosure templates and placement guidance to improve transparency, comparability, and GenAI literacy in applied linguistics research writing.
