Transition from Educator to Educator-Administrator in Tertiary Language Program Administration

By Wesley Curtis
City University of Hong Kong

In the context of tertiary language programs, the transition from Educator to Educator-Administrator is one for which the vocation of teaching may present partial or limited pathways for relevant professional development. As such, practitioners assuming first-time responsibility for the leadership of an academic or service unit responsible for institution-wide language education/support may encounter challenges associated with (1) expectations of the role; and/or (2) prior preparatory activities. This is particularly true for those who find themselves thrust into the role of acting Educator-Administrator with very limited notice.
In this session, Dr. Wesley Curtis will draw upon his own experience in local and international contexts, including self-financed and centrally funded programs, to explore implications for professional development. He will offer actionable advice for educators considering roles in tertiary language program administration, as well as for those who may be navigating similar career transitions.
