Seminar: Nora Hussin

The Hong Kong Association for Self-Access Learning and Development (HASALD) would like to invite you to attend the following seminar:

Breaking Boundaries – Microlearning as a Catalyst for Innovation in Language Curricula
by Dr Nora Hussin

Microlearning, with its concise, interactive, and adaptive modules, offers a scalable model for creating language curricula aligned with the principles of self-directed and lifelong learning. By breaking down large, linear curricula into smaller focused units, microlearning can create dynamic and flexible frameworks where learners can engage with content in a personalized and modular way. This approach has the potential to redefine how language curricula are structured, moving away from rigid, one-size-fits-all models to more adaptable learner-centred structures (see Lykova & Savelyeva, 2025; Monib, Qazi, & Apong, 2025). When combined with Generative AI (GenAI), microlearning can further enhance curriculum design, allowing for adaptive pathways that align with individual learner goals, optimizing learner involvement and providing real-time support (see Boumalek, 2024).

This potential however raises critical questions about microlearning’s role in reshaping language curricula. By prioritizing modularity, autonomy, and adaptability, microlearning challenges the dominance of linear frameworks and educator-led instruction. Yet, its implementation presents challenges including coherence, sustainability, and institutional alignment.

This presentation explores microlearning’s potential and challenges to innovate language curricula in a language centre in Hong Kong. Drawing on leadership experience in microlearning at a language centre, this seminar highlights the opportunities and challenges of incorporating microlearning into language curricula. While the development of a work-in-progress framework remains exploratory, it offers insights into how microlearning can be strategically aligned with curriculum-level outcomes and broader institutional goals. This seminar invites participants to reflect on the possibilities and challenges of microlearning in creating modular, agile and learner-centred structures to address the demands of language education in rapidly changing contexts.
