The Hong Kong Association for Self-Access Learning and Development (HASALD) would like to invite you to attend the following seminar:
Technology-enabled shadow education: Implications for self-access learning and educational equity
by Dr Kevin Yung
Technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), has been widely used in education, including out-of-school contexts such as shadow education, i.e., supplementary tutoring that students use to supplement their academic learning outside of school hours. Shadow education has become ubiquitous globally and raised various issues such as tutor dependence and educational inequity. This presentation examines how technology is transforming shadow education and creating new opportunities for self-access English learning and educational equity. Drawing on a year-long narrative inquiry with Hong Kong secondary school students in online English private tutoring, I first explore how learners exercise agency in complex, technology-mediated learning environments. The study reveals how online tutoring afforded learners unique opportunities for self-regulated learning while also presenting challenges. I will then showcase my ongoing research and development work on AI-enabled tutoring platforms for students’ self-access and adaptive learning which aim to democratise access to quality supplementary learning. The presentation concludes by discussing implications for self-access learning, including how AI-enabled platforms can support learner autonomy, address educational inequalities, and inform the design of effective self-access learning environments in an increasingly technology-driven educational landscape.
