Unlocking New Affordances of a Hybrid Intelligence-enhanced Writing Assessment System: Redesigning Writing Pedagogy and Assessment

Advances in digital and generative artificial intelligence (GAI) technologies have expanded the affordances of technological tools that can strategically be integrated into language subjects to enhance classroom pedagogy and support ubiquitous learning. This seminar situates GAI-mediated academic discourse development within a higher education context. The speaker will share frontline teachers’ experience with human-GAI collaboration in an English communication for social sciences subject, systematising how hybrid intelligence is leveraged in disciplinary writing pedagogy to mediate students’ disciplinary knowledge, advanced literacy and cognitive development. The speaker will define the key components of a human-GAI pedagogical collaboration framework designed to facilitate integration of generative AI-powered technological tools in genre-based language pedagogy. The seminar will also examine how a hybrid intelligence-enabled writing platform fosters students’ engagement with more cognitively challenging types of disciplinary discourse –- a task that requires students to construct logical arguments, reflect critically on disciplinary theory-practice dialectics, and mobilise multimodal semiotic resources to sustain their agentic engagement with the meaning-making flow within and beyond the classroom.
About the speaker:
Dr. Esther Tong is Head of the Division of Languages and Communication and Director of CPCE Centre for Pedagogic Research at College of Professional and Continuing Education, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her research interests lie in the areas of AI and technology-mediated language learning, multimodal pedagogies and content-and-language-integrated-learning (CLIL) assessment. She has led funded projects on AI-assisted academic English writing, and pioneered innovations such as metaverse-integrated and mobile-assisted language learning. Her dedication to advancing language educational practices has earned her multiple teaching awards, including PolyU CPCE Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching Performance/Achievement (2014/15) and the FSTE General Education Outstanding Teaching Award (2017).
