Title: Autonomous learning for the millennial students

Powerpoint: download

Abstract:

In recent years, autonomous learning has been receiving increasing attention in education, especially in contexts beyond self-access or independent learning centres. With the development of technology, students undoubtedly have easier access to different types of learning materials and strategies. However, there does not seem to be much evidence to show that students have generally become more autonomous learners.

In this presentation, Hazel Chiu will convey her perceptions of the learning styles of present-day students, with reference to her classroom language teaching experience, as well as her implementation of support services in the independent learning centre at the English Language Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and other teaching contexts she worked in previously. She will illustrate her ideas making use of specific examples from various teaching contexts. Together with the audience, she hopes to explore possibilities for the use of strategies and support services to suit current students and help them to develop as autonomous learners.
